The University will take all necessary steps to protect a student in such a relationship against academic, professional or financial hardship.

You may read and download the policy in its entirety here: Staff members at Columbia should not participate in hiring, supervision, employment actions, evaluation, decisions pertaining to promotion, or the direct setting of salary or wages, for someone employed at Columbia with whom that person has or has had a consensual romantic or sexual relationship except in unusual circumstances.

Consensual Relationship: a romantic, dating and/or sexual relationship agreed to by the parties involved.

Position of authority includes but may not be limited to situations in which the faculty member makes or is responsible for an evaluation of a student for admission, coursework, promotion, financial aid, research funding, suspension, expulsion or other discipline.

A CSU Employee shall not enter into a consensual relationship with a Student or Employee over whom s/he exercises direct or otherwise significant academic, administrative, supervisory, evaluative, counseling, or extracurricular authority.

In the event such a relationship already exists, each Campus shall develop a procedure to reassign such authority to avoid violations of this policy.

It is the policy of the University that no faculty member shall have a consensual romantic or sexual relationship with a student over whom he or she exercises academic or professional authority.

It is also the University’s policy that no faculty member shall exercise academic or professional authority over any student with whom he or she has or previously has had a consensual romantic or sexual relationship.
