IP Addresses and the Domain Name System (DNS) are two core elements of Internet infrastructure that have been working together for a long time – the DNS typically being referred to as the “telephone book of the Internet” – to map human readable domain names to IP addresses.

As core building blocks, these technologies can be leveraged together to create interesting solutions to common networking problems.

However when I set up a new VPN tunnel on either device, it stays on rather than the remote ip address. [delete]I'm really surprised at the stability of these devices.[/delete] VPN's are a bit tricky-- so much so that I made a script that sets up the tunnels for me.

The other VPN tunnel is still working and I don't see any obvious misconfiguration on the new router. If you miss just ONE setting it can make the tunnel not work, and you can stare at it for days and not see the tiny missing character or box that wasn't checked right.

Enter the DNS name you configured for this end into Domain Name The IP Address and Subnet Mask are automatically filled in from your running configuration.

Don't change them Under Remote Group Setup, select "IP Only" (it should be selected already based on your dynamic selection above) and then the next drop down from "IP Address" to "IP by DNS Resolved" Enter the remote dynamic dns name in the box to the right of "IP by DNS Resolved" Now for the settings.

In some cases, when static WAN IP addresses are available, there is a charge associated with their utilization (recent market rates command up to .95 per month for a single static WAN IP address).

The need for ISPs to constantly evolve their network architecture and related capacity causes the need and desire to deploy dynamic IP addresses to their subscribers.

DDNS providers allow the registeration and creation of Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDN) that can be mapped to home or branch office Internet connections without cost .

This eliminates the need for a static IP address, since the DDNS provider will automatically update its DNS records with your dynamic IP address every time it changes.

From Cisco IOS version 12.4 onwards, Cisco routers have built-in support for a variety of DDNS providers, making it much easier and a more reliable alternative, as you no longer require a PC in your network that will run the DDNS provider's client program.

They are currently set up with a Gateway to Gateway VPN.
